Soil burrowing cockroach

As I was driving to Matong State Forest yesterday, I kept seeing these black shiny things moving across Deepwater Road.

It's a soil burrowing cockroach (Geoscapheus dilatatus) and about 5cm long.

They live underground in sandy soils, constructing burrows to a depth of around one metre.

Apparently they are only seen on the ground surface following rain.

There had been 15-20mm on the weekend, so there were many puddles on the road.
